Tonic

I have my usual, presumably preschool-induced bimonthly cold. It is just transitioning from the fever stage to the congestion stage. I’ve been drinking herbal tea all day and am sick of it. I wanted a hot beverage with a little more body, maybe a little spicy.

So I went to the fridge and found chicken stock base and fresh ginger. I reconstituted a teaspoon of Better than Bouillon with hot water and three slices of ginger. Perfect. I am feeling much better now, but I reserve the right to start complaining again in the morning.

new years day, i fell sick as a dog. only, way, way sicker. because how many actual sick dogs have you known? my husband succumbed the next day, but before he did, he made the most delicious pseudo hot-n-sour soup ever… homemade duck stock that we had in the fridge, finely minced garlic, thinly sliced jalapeno, squeezes of lime juice–once that boiled, threw in a handful of orzo…gave it a few minutes, and then whisked in a beaten egg. it was deLICious, and i’m not dead…nor is he, and i made it for him when i could stand up again and he was still laid out.

when i was small, if we were sick enough, my dad used to make Hot Toddys, which involved lemon or orange juice, bourbon, honey, and hot water. we HATED them. in retrospect…well, i wish someone would ply me with bourbon in a pharmaceutical fashion now.

    feel better soon!!! :)

Woohoo, I have The Sickness too! I’ve been a big fan of pho broth lately, with plenty of sriracha and lime (for scurvy… ha). Ginger tea, of course. And I have some raki, that black licorice-tasting liquor from Turkey, and over there they make this honey-red-pepper-flake-raki concoction which I attempted to quaff and found not very pleasing.

Good luck! And Frantic Foodie, when I’m ill, microwaving broth is about my speed too.

Katelyn, Laurie offered to get me some pho from Than brothers today, but I didn’t feel like eating. Eventually I had some Kozy Shack pudding and Laurie is making curried carrot soup for dinner.
