Cooking with Kids: Bacon Doughnuts

Try this at home, really. The bacon doughnuts were better than breakfast for dinner. Even my daughter Iris, age four, liked them. At least, I think.

“What was your favorite doughnut?” I asked her.

“The bacon,” she replied. I beamed, until I realized she was eating a plain strip of bacon.

At a restaurant last winter, I had mission fig beignets with cara cara oranges, butterscotch, and bacon ice cream. Best dang ice cream I ever ate.

Bacon and maple together are heaven. On a donut? If a two year old can experience food euphoria I think my Monster might with this recipe. Although, I’m not organic lard is something on my regular grocery list. I must go searching, and invite some friends over for brunch.
