jeff, I was wondering if those things would work for matcha. Glad to hear they do.

I have a little battery powered tool, it has a whisk but also a head that can be used for frothing milk (it's a disk the size of a dime and is serrated on the edges).

It works great for mixing matcha, and at the end I lift it up to give the brew a little foam.

Not exactly cerimonial, but it makes a nice cup of matcha!

The kaze matcha from Den's tea seems to be pretty low in caffeine, which is what I need (I have a slight allergy to caffeine)

Mmmmm. Mmmmatcha. One of my housemates and I had a little matcha adventure last Monday at Uwajimaya. I wanted a little more variety. He wanted matcha of his own. We literally spent half an hour giggling at our inability to read Japanese before making our respective choices. It's nice to read about your recent tea adventures. My homemade matcha protocol is very similar to yours, btw. Perhaps less elegant than the full on tea ceremony, but certainly delightful.

Lani, I'm going to try and find the matcha for me at Uwajimaya once I run out of Kiri-no-Mori. The hard thing about shopping there is that they have matchas at all price points, right down to lousy stuff for $5. That said, I've never actually taken someone aside and asked for advice.

Yes, I get a caffeine rush. The caffeine content of matcha is comparable to espresso. Probably a little less, but it depends how strong you make it.

Have you found a good matcha to purchase at Uwajimaya? And does it give you a caffeine rush at all?

No, I mean the full-size. I'm guessing the frother wouldn't do a good job of suspending the matcha in the water, but that's just a guess. It might work great.

I was thinking that a matcha whisk would be great for hot cocoa; I'm going to get one for this purpose next time I see them at Daiso.

When you say you tried an electric hand blender, does that mean a full-size beater thingy like you'd use for whipped cream or egg whites or whatever? Or does that mean a small whisk/frother thingy like http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-Schiuma-Battery-Operated-Turbo-Frother/dp/B000F5M724/ ?
