I like Jason's suggestions ... but my version (because it's longer and therefore more Teutonic) would be:
die Enttäuschungsehnsucht, or
"the disappointment of impossible romantic yearning."

ts, there's a whole chapter in the great new book Predictably Irrational about why free is so tantalizing. Highly recommended.

As I suspected. Maybe you could just pretend to be shopping for a car or tires. Especially on bbq days.
What is it about free that is so tantilizing?

ts, I have no car, but I should get one if it means free vending machine coffee.

Cocoa + yogurt = desperation chocolate fix, but as noted, grainy in a good way. Been eating that for years.

mamster - free coffee drinks at Elliott Auto Service Center on 4th S, next time you need your tires rotated or oil changed (do you even have a car?) and Subaru quick service place up North on Aurora as well. The sales room coffee station used to have hoho's too! And sometimes grilled hot dogs.

Susann, I had cocoa yogurt for my midnight snack last night and it was awesome! Slightly grainy, but in a good way.

My midnight snack is at 9:30pm.

Jason, that is too cool. And Laurel, I always hit up the free cappuccino machine when I'm at the returns counter at IKEA. Is it still there?

Taking it too literally, but I think Enttäuschungslust would do the trick... Roughly, wanting to be disappointed. That is a Googlewhack, at least until today... Täuschungslust, roughly, wanting to be deceived, might be a good alternative.

I'd be able to put that word to good use too, because I have a strange form of partial amnesia. Every once in awhile I think that maybe this time those powdered donuts or chocolate-covered cupcake things in the snack machine at work will be tasty.

Sadly, this is never the case.

Ha! It'll probably taste like the gas station "cappuccino" that I have a nostalgic craving for. And a cheese dog.
