Hmmm, the grinder question. I know I'm kind of late with this post, but one answer is to put some uncooked rice through the grinder after the spice which will clean all the bits you, and your kitchen paper, can't reach.

The other alternative is to but a really good coffee grinder.

Can you guess what my immediate response to "If you’re the kind of person who likes scary medical textbook photos..." was?
giggle
I guess you know your audience.

I feel your pain on spice/coffee grinders. I ditched mine after the wife started using it for actual coffee. Now I use a Jamie Oliver-style mortar and pestle for all my cumin and coriander seed crushing needs. It's a big stone thing, good and heavy with a large bowl. Easy to use, easy to clean, works like a charm. Purchased at City Kitchens.

I'm with you on the spice grinders, except my Krups was a Braun.

The Kitchenaid isn't tooo bad, but when you shake it to get the big bits to hit the blade, stuff does go places. Too bad, 'cause when I saw it in the store, I thought I had discovered the answer.
