Carolyn, yes.

Wendy, glad to see you here. The weird thing is, we didn't just shop at Fairway, we also went to the late, great West Side Supermarket at 110th and Broadway a lot. The only things I remember buying there are chocolate pudding, New York cheddar, and Pepperidge Farm cinnamon swirl bread. The fact that Pepperidge Farm bread isn't available on the west coast is the biggest travesty in all of commerce.

I think I spent at least a week with you in New York, and while I vividly remember grocery shopping, the only two meals I recall are 1, going to the International Soup Kitchen with you and Aunt Betty, and B, you making "5 Brothers" one evening. I can't imagine what we ate--or what Laurie and I grocery-shopped for.

Do you think that Laurie's and my discussion the other night at Union about your "non-poor" days in NYC might have sparked these memories?

I don't remember the street number, but it was on the south side of 14th, a few paces west of 9th.

edit: I should mention that this is two blocks from my favorite street name in New York: Little West 12th Street.

When I say I recreated it, I mean that I looked up some recipes and cobbled together something that sounded like Pepe's version, substituting jarred sauce for homemade. It was more dumb luck than inspiration.
