&lt;p&gt;I found this recipe, but I am looking for the stuff they used on tall ships around the 1770's, it looked similar to the round biscuit photo you have here.  I think it had a mineral additive, but cant find any literature.  If you know, do let me know.  thanks!&lt;/p&gt;
